Essential safety information for trekking in Kerala’s forests
DO:
- Stay on trail
- Make noise walking
- Back away calmly from elephants
- Report sightings to guide
- Follow guide instructions
DO NOT:
- Approach or feed wildlife
- Run from a predator
- Use flashlights at night
- Leave food scraps
- Trek alone in remote zones
Monsoon Season: June – September
Most trails are closed during monsoon. Flash floods and landslides are common in Wayanad and Idukki. Always check trail status before travelling.
No signal zones
- Agasthyarkoodam (full route)
- Silent Valley deep zones
- Wayanad Chembra upper section
- Munnar Rhododendron Valley
Inform someone of your route and expected return time before entering these areas.
Snake bite first aid
Keep the person calm, reduce movement, and seek emergency medical care immediately. Do not cut or suck the wound.
Dehydration signs
Watch for dizziness, dry mouth, dark urine, and fatigue. Rest in shade and rehydrate slowly.
Sprain & fracture
Immobilize the injured area, avoid weight-bearing, and arrange assisted evacuation.
Bee stings
Move away from the area, remove visible stingers carefully, and monitor for allergic reactions.
Altitude sickness
If symptoms worsen, descend, rest, and seek medical advice. Avoid pushing higher with severe headache or vomiting.
